BBC viewers have been told to watch a new coming-of-age drama that fans have dubbed ‘Top Boy for kids.’

Debuting on BBC Three just yesterday (March 24), Crongton is now up for binge-watching on BBC iPlayer.

The series, spanning ten episodes, hasn’t been rated on IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes yet, but early birds who’ve watched it are already spreading the word for others to catch it.

The narrative centres around a band of pre-teens navigating life on a rough housing estate. Viewers get a glimpse into the life of protagonist Lemar ‘Liccle Bit’ Jackson and his mates as they confront issues like poverty, peer pressure, and the menace of local gangs.

Featuring a youthful ensemble, many of whom are stepping onto the screen for the first time after being discovered through an open casting call, the cast includes Samson Agboola as Liccle Bit, with Nielle Springer, Noah Cox, Seyi Andes-Pelumi, Safia Hamad, and Sophie Spatariu rounding out the group, reports Surrey Live.

While the show portrays the youngsters’ everyday struggles, it doesn’t shy away from heavy topics such as gang violence, yet manages to intersperse moments of levity that will resonate with its young demographic.

Singer and actress Kéllé Bryan, who has a supporting role in the show, expressed her hopes that the drama’s significant subjects would make a lasting impact on the youth.

“With all the gun and knife crime happening, hopefully this is a show that will be able to connect to young people before we lose them to gang culture,” she shared with the Daily Star ahead of the series premiere.

The ex-member of Eternal added: “It’s about speaking to young people in their language. I’m hopeful that it speaks to a generation of young people.”

Critics have given thumbs up for the way the show grapples with gritty subjects. Children’s film critique site Kidzcoolit took to social media to declare: “Crongton is genuinely the best TV show the BBC have made for Tweens in decades.”

Emphasising its appeal across generations they added: “So fresh and brilliantly informative for both Kidz and parents in the same way Grange Hill and Biker Grove entertained as well as educated in a subtle and sensitive way. Top Boy for Kidz – this show is genius. Everyone should be watching! ! ! !”

Adding to the chorus of approval, a delighted Tik Tok user posted: “Amazing show, binged it all yesterday.”
