Actress Lacey Turner has candidly opened up on the sad news she had a miscarriage. The EastEnders star, 37, was speaking on the Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast, revealing at the time of her loss she felt alone.

Lacey admitted she didn’t know anyone who’d been through something similar and was left unsure of where to turn to next. She confessed that it was this feeling of isolation that encouraged her to use her platform to share her story.

With is, she hopes to help others feel less alone in their grief, and work towards better aftercare for families navigating baby loss. Speaking to the podcast host, Giovanna Fletcher, Lacey said of her experience: “It’s funny. You don’t tell anyone [you’re pregnant], but then if you do tell someone, and you lose it, you’ve then got to tell them you lost it. And that’s some awkward conversation.

“And also it makes other people feel awkward, because I became quite comfortable with saying, Oh, I’ve had a miscarriage, and then you watch that person go, ‘Oh my God. I don’t know what to say now’.”

Giovanni then jumped in to say: “It’s so hard, because the only way that we can ever break that down is by just having it out there.

“But if they can hear it, then at some point it becomes that easier thing that’s just out there in society that happens that actually, [people think] let’s, let’s talk about it. So, it’s really hard.”

Lacey agreed, adding: “If everybody was okay or comfortable with talking about it, like many other things, it would help so many people.”

Lacey and her husband Matt Kay are parents to Dusty Violet five, Trilby Fox, four, and Gipsy Olive, four months. She has been open about their miscarriage woes in previous years.

In 2021, she spoke with BBC Breakfast and opened up about her personal experiences. She said at the time: “For me, I think you become a mother the minute you’re pregnant. For that to be taken away, that’s another loss.

“You grieve the fact that you aren’t going to be a mother, as well as losing a baby. It was a loss at seven weeks.”

She went on: “[…] I was 29, I think, and we were pregnant and I was so excited thinking of names and things like that. I just remember sitting on my bed in a ball, sobbing. At the time, I remember thinking, ‘Why me? Why is this only happening to me?’ I did feel so alone because nobody knew.”

Lacey then recalled how she went back to work the following day as if “nothing had happened”. Reflecting on how “sad” the memory now makes her feel in retrospect, she continued: “I was probably walking around feeling so heartbroken yet nobody would have had a clue.”
