The Princess of Wales is known to always put her three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – first, and there’s been several times where she’s spoke out about the trials and tribulations of parenting

The Princess of Wales may have a lofty royal title – but to her three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, she is just mum. And despite her status as a member of the Firm, being a hands-on parent is the job she considers the most important.

In fact, while out on royal duties, Kate often can’t talk with pride about her three youngsters, who no doubt will be treating her tomorrow on Mother’s Day, giving a glimpse into their lives at home. But as all parents know, raising children is never easy and Kate has often spoken out about the trials and tribulations of bringing up her young family…

Knitting fail

Kate has often stunned fans with her artistic skills, whether it be her photography or drawing, and she clearly has a creative side. But there’s one crafty hobby that Kate revealed she picked up in order to create a very special present for her eldest son Prince George. However, she was later forced to admit the present turned out to be a disaster as she was “really bad” at the skill. So what was the hobby? Knitting!

Kate first revealed she was trying her hand at knitting way back in 2013 when she was pregnant with George. According to Hello!, she told a group of royal fans while visiting Glasgow: “I’ve been trying to knit and I’m really bad. I should be asking for tips!”

In 2020, during a trip to Bradford, Kate visited Older Yet Wiser – an organisation that supports grandparents – and met with some grandmothers who were showing off their crocheting skills. And there she confessed that her attempts to knit George a jumper had completely failed. She told the group: “I tried knitting when I first had George. I tried to knit him a very special jumper, but I got halfway down and it splattered. It’s such an amazing skill.”

Planning holidays

More recently, Kate talked about her love of travel – but admitted that fitting it in around her children’s school holidays could be difficult. Earlier this month, the princess joined the Irish Guards for their St Patrick’s Day celebrations – and told one guardsman how she would love to take her youngsters to Australia.

She told Corporal Adam Hamilton, an Australian reservist: “George finds it fascinating that he has been to Australia and New Zealand. I would like to go back there with them now. It’s finding time to do that. But I love to travel – yes, it’s a long flight. But I love the Middle East because that’s familiar to me (from) growing up. There are so many opportunities now to travel, I think it’s brilliant to experience it.

“We tend to go further afield when it’s official visits, it’s being able to carve out time to experience these countries in a more private capacity. Because otherwise you end up seeing lots of insides of amazing buildings but you don’t get to meet that many.. people. It’s making sure that you can combine a bit of work with… the children. I might see you down there!”

Hair struggle

Whenever Kate steps out in public with all three of her children, they always look immaculately turned out. But it’s not easy getting all three youngsters ready – especially Charlotte, and it is all down to her hair. During a visit to Cumbria in June 2019, Kate revealed that she struggles with styling Charlotte’s beautiful hair.

A young girl who met the Princess of Wales on her visit offered her a bouquet of flowers and was met with a sweet compliment from Kate. She told her: “I love your plaits. They are so pretty. Who’s done those, who’s done your plaits?” Then Kate made a sweet revelation, which many parents of young girls will relate to.

She admitted: “I tried to do a plait with Charlotte this morning, it didn’t really work very well.” Meanwhile, it’s not just Kate who has spoken of the struggle of styling Charlotte’s hair – Prince William has too. On a trip to Blackpool in 2019, he was chatting to a fellow dad, who admitted that he’d too had difficulty learning how to do his daughter’s hair.

The youngest of Kate’s children is six-year-old Louis – and over the years, he has proved to be somewhat energetic. So it’s no wonder that Kate previously told how the youngster has been charging around on his scooter and keeping her and William on their toes.

The mum-of-three shared details of the family’s private life during a phone call with brave Mila Sneddon, who had been undergoing chemotherapy for leukaemia. Kate said: “Louis has got so big now. He’s very quick running around and he’s on his little scooter as well. He’s very quick. I can’t keep up with him.”

Mum guilt

Meanwhile, one highly relatable parenting confession Kate once made in the past was about “mum guilt”. Kate recalled feeling ‘guilty’ when she was too busy to take her daughter Charlotte to school on Giovanna Fletcher’s podcast Happy Mum, Happy Baby. When asked if she feels mum guilt, Kate admitted: “Yes absolutely – and anyone who doesn’t as a mother is actually lying.

“Yep – all the time, Even this morning, coming to the nursery visit here – George and Charlotte were like ‘Mummy how could you possibly not be dropping us off as school this morning?’ It’s a constant challenge – you hear it time after time from mums, even mums who aren’t necessarily working and aren’t pulled in the directions of having to juggle work life and family life.”
